We enjoyed the B&B business and
all our guests. Unfortunately there are a number of
decisions made on all levels of Governments that make it
very difficult for us to continue:
-
On the
local level CVEDS lost contact to the small
businesses what gave the Comox Valley its
reputation. With a 4-million dollar info-center what
is at a wrong location and increased costs for the
B&Bs. Imagine, to have brochures available will cost
a B&B between $300 and $400/year.
-
The
Chamber of Commerce increased their membership fees
by 100% and at the same time reduced the service:
They used to distribute our brochures for free - now
it costs more than the membership fee.
-
On the
provincial level - Tourism BC has been taken over by
the Provincial Government - and what a surprise:
NOTHING was done to increase tourism. To be listed
with the "BC Tourism Approved" program it will cost
between $300 and $800 - in addition to be listed
under "what's available" we would have to subscribe
to their booking service, which will cost another 10
to 15%.
-
To
advertise in Tourism Vancouver Island it will cost
about $2000 for a business card size ad, something
what is out of reach for a B&B.
-
On the
federal level - the people in Ottawa must know how
to scare American fishermen away! They closed
fishing rights for halibut at the peak season.
To recover
from all of these decisions - it will take so long that
we would be well over 70 - and we do not want to wait
that long. We recommend to choose one of the B&B's of
our association:
